Thursday morning, Chattanooga, Tenn., firefighters responded to an alarm and found a fire in a kitchen. No people were at home, but firefighters found about 10 cats in the house, FOXNews reports.
Though several cats escaped the house on their own, others showed signs of smoke inhalation. Firefighters treated the affected cats with oxygen bottles and specially designed pet-sized oxygen masks. Fire department spokesperson Bruce Garner said one cat may not survive.
The cause of the fire is believed to be an unattended candle, most likely knocked over by one of the cats, according to Chattanooga Fire Dept. Captain Lesley Morgan.
