What Punishment Fits?

CAT FANCY and CatChannel Editor Susan Logan blogs about two teens who tortured a cat to death.

Posted: September 8, 2008 3 a.m. EDT

I’m still numb after reading one of the stories on today’s CatChannel Newswire about two Alberta, Canada, teens who broke into a home and tortured the family cat to death in a microwave oven. To say the story grieves and disturbs me just isn’t quite enough to describe how I feel.

I grieve for Princess the cat, who suffered great physical and emotional pain that lasted for maybe 10 minutes before she died. I grieve for Princess’ family knowing how their beloved cat’s last moments were spent. And I’m disturbed that there are people who could do such a thing walking freely in our society.

One hundred hours of community service with no jail time does not fit this crime. These are 16-year-olds, not children. They know good from evil and they knew this was evil. They could have put a stop to what they were doing at some point during the 10 minutes in which Princess was screaming in pain. But they let it go on until she died.

I can’t even imagine what punishment would fit such a crime and I don’t want to, because I don’t want my thoughts to be as cruel as theirs. I do believe they will have to answer to God one day and, frankly, they should be scared.

This kids are SICK. I can't believe that was all the punishment they were given, and I heard that they were not allowed to have a family pet for 2 years ( the two 16 year old boys)....like 2 years is going to make such a difference. This 2 need to be put in for some psych evaulation. sick sick sick. My stomach churned when I heard this story, and what is sad, is that this stuff is happening ALL the time and nothing is being done to these people that abuse these animals! we need harsher animal cruiety laws. period.

I can’t imagine a punishment that would suitably address such cruelty. Those boys should not be permitted back into society though and should be locked up for mental evaluation at the very least. Neither boy should be free to walk the streets as this type of behavior is only an indicator of what sick and cruel acts they are capable of committing.
Poor Princess for the gruesome death she had to endure. I pray that gentle soul is at peace at the bridge and the two animals that committed such a horrible crime against humanity will someday face their judgment day in a suitable fashion.

I wish I'd not read this before bed. I'm gonna have nightmares now. There was actually a case in the news where a woman microwaved her BABY, she was that drunk.
These kids should be in jail for a year. I would say more than that, but it'd be a start at least. Anyone who would treat an animal that cruelly will not hesitate to treat a human that way at some point. When you lose your ability to treasure life, you deserve some pretty severe punishment. They should also pay the fees for the family to adopt another pet of their choice, and to pay for that pet's vet and food costs, and/or for counseling for the family.
