Kitten Suitcase

Cats Found In Abandoned Suitcase

Mother and kittens rescued by New York police.

A suspicious suitcase left on a New York sidewalk turned out to be housing a mother cat and three kittens, who were rescued by police on Dec. 16.

The 2-year-old Russian Blue mix and her three 6-week-old kittens were found shut inside the suitcase in a Brooklyn neighborhood, after a passerby reported it there, according to a report in the New York Daily News.

The family is now recuperating and doing well in the custody of New York Animal Care and Control at a Brooklyn animal shelter.

They were a little lethargic, says Melissa Manders, coordinator for New Hope, an animal shelter program. But they weren't hurt.

The kittens will be nursed for at least two weeks, then they and the mother will be offered for adoption.

For information about adopting the cats, call New York Animal Care and Control at (212) 788-4000.

I VOLUNTEER IN CAT RESCUE, AND ONCE A CARRIER FULL OF CATS WAS FOUND A COUPLE BLOCKS FROM OUR STORE BY SOMEONE OUT WALKING THEIR DOG. IT WAS 2 ADULTS, 1 "TEENAGER" AND 2 KITTENS ALL CRAMMED IN A STANDARD SIZE CAT CARRIER. IT WAS RAINING, AND THEY WERE IN AN ALLEY SITTING BY THE TRASH. WE THINK SOMEONE MAY HAVE MOVED OUT OF THE UPPER APARTMENTS AND JUST LEFT THEM BY THEIR HOUSEHOLD DISCARDS. OF COURSE WE FOUND HOMES FOR ALL OF THEM, BUT IT WOULD HAVE JUST BEEN EASIER FOR THEM TO WALK A COUPLE BLOCKS AND LEAVE THEM WITH US.
WE HAVE ALSO HAD CATS AND KITTENS LEFT ON OUR DOORSTEP TAPED IN BOXES, AS I'M SURE MOST OTHER SHELTERS HAVE. TOO BAD PEOPLE DON'T TAKE RESPONSIBILITY AND TRY TO FIND HOMES FOR THEIR PETS OR A SHELTER TO TAKE THEM TO.
