Flash flooding in the Southwest brings to light important issues for pet owners: how to evacuate their homes and bring their animals with them. The Humane Society of the United States urges pet owners forced to evacuate to take their animals. Pets left behind to fend for themselves can suffer from starvation, fall prey to predators, or die from exposure to the elements.
Because many evacuation shelters do not accept pets, the HSUS reminds pet owners to make plans in advance in the event a disaster makes evacuation necessary. Check with friends and family that live out of the area, and look into hotels that accept pets.
The HSUS prompts pet owners to prepare an emergency kit specifically for their animals. Such a kit for cats would include:
A three-day supply of food and drinking water
Food and water bowls
Cat litter and litterbox
Current photos and physical description of all cats
Collars and ID tags for the cats to wear at all times
Medications, vaccination records, licenses, first aid supplies
Sturdy cat carrier with blankets or towels for bedding and warmth. Carriers should be large enough to comfortably house your pets for several days.
