Cat Food Recalled

Even More Cat Food Recalled

Menu Foods recalls more cat food items traced to contaminated wheat gluten.

On April 10, Canadian manufacturer Menu Foods Inc., recalled additional wet cat food produced by its Streetsville, Ontario, plant for both the U.S. and Canadian markets.

Menu Foods says it decided to recall the cat food after learning from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the agency leading the recall investigation, that its Canadian plant had received some of the Chinese-supplied contaminated wheat gluten from Las Vegas importer ChemNutra. The wheat gluten is tainted with melamine, a plastic used in making countertops, floor tiles and some fertilizers.

For the most current list of all recalled products, go to the FDA’s website. It includes 5,511 entries.

The pet food recall that began March 16 by Menu Foods because of complaints of cats and dogs becoming sick after eating its wet-style pet foods, now has embroiled nearly 100 pet food brands made from across the United States and Canada, including both dry and wet varieties.

Earlier this week, pet food company Royal Canin Canada recalled all of its Medi-Cal Feline Dissolution Formula prescription canned cat food, which was produced by Menu Foods’ Ontario plant. To read more about it, click here.

Later today, the Senate Subcommittee on Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration and Related Agencies will hear testimony regarding the FDA's and others’ role in the pet food recall.
